LIFE FROM INSIDE. Graphics for care and prevention
On Monday, 27 October, at the Teatrino di Palazzo Visconti in Milan, a presentation was held of some of the theses realised as part of the Life From Inside project, the training course developed by the IED (European Institute of Design) thanks to its partnership with the Bracco Historical Archive. The project also involved the Bracco Foundation and the Italian Diagnostic Centre, which provided scientific advice to the students.
Also present were renowned graphic designers, including Armando Milani, who created the CDI logo in 1973, and Emilio Fioravanti, who, during his career, was responsible for the graphic image of the Piccolo Teatro del Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The audience also included healthcare personnel from the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza and the 1°A Graphic Design class (IED).
The aim of the project was to develop visual communication tools in the field of medical-scientific research and diagnostic imaging, drawing inspiration from the stories, values and graphic heritage of the Bracco Historical Archive and the Francesco Turci Fund, which Bracco acquired in November 2021. The study plan, divided into four phases: research laboratory, preliminary development, development laboratory and finalisation of the projects, involved 13 students from the Graphic Design course (A.Y. 2024-2025).
During the meta-project phase, students had the opportunity to consult and study graphic materials preserved in the Bracco Historical Archive and the Francesco Turci Collection: advertising postcards, house organs, leaflets, brochures and much more. Analysis of this valuable heritage enabled them to develop a strategy for their degree theses.
- A CENTURY OF BRACCO. From the Archives, a story that continues to inspire
by Andrea Salvo and Marco Vecchione
The research explored the Historical Archives with the aim of highlighting the most representative materials in the company’s history, showing how medical communication evolved over time. The students developed a visual communication campaign to be used for the company’s centenary.
- X-FOLK
by Patricia Elena Jaymes Obregon, Giulia Banfi and Alessia Cavallino
The project analysed the tools that transform the invisible into images and, through graphic proposals and the development of a web app for the Italian Diagnostic Centre (CDI), made it possible to reflect on the potential of aesthetics to make even the most complex realities accessible and understandable to patients.
- HYSTERIA. The Tension Within
by Mariasole Bombardi and Angelica Fiore
The aim of the study is to raise public awareness of two extremely common and often underdiagnosed gynaecological conditions: vulvodynia and endometriosis, through advertising campaigns and the creation of a video using the data sonification technique.
Three other theses were produced as part of the Life From Inside project (without the contribution of Bracco but still an integral part of the training programme).
- CASA PARKINSON
by Sara Scicchitano and Giorgia Caparesi
‘Casa Parkinson’ was created as a model to offer an integrated and personalised facility for Parkinson’s patients. The project is aimed at two key audiences: patients and caregivers on the one hand, and investors and institutions on the other. Promoted by the Italian Parkinson’s Confederation, the pilot facility designed and illustrated in this project will be launched in Bergamo.
- ALS – THE PRISON OF THE BODY
by Maria Vittoria Viazzo
Medical information is everywhere, but it is not always accessible, especially when it comes to complex diseases such as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). The challenge of this study is to make the disease more understandable, human and accessible with the help of design and visual communication.
- RESET. Value the Bed Feelings
by Sherlyn Lazzarini
Sleep disorders alter the quality, duration or rhythm of sleep, affect physical and mental well-being and cause chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating and mood swings. Through design and illustration, the student wanted to draw attention to these disorders.
